About this work
A skeletal nude man stands barefoot at the centre, ribs and every bone visible beneath sagging skin, eyes wide and mouth open in a fixed stare. Behind his shoulder stands a taller clothed man in a dark coat, impassive and unreadable. To the right a tiled wall has cracked into jagged shards, pitted with bullet holes.
The figures are modelled in soft charcoal and pale yellow pastel that renders the starved body almost translucent, ribs and tendons picked out in fine hatching, while the clothed figure remains a flat, heavy silhouette. The broken wall is drawn with hard graphic edges unlike the soft modelling of the bodies, giving the sheet a bleak, unsettling sense of violence just done or imminent.
